INSIGHTS: Promoting Health Rights of Underserved Communities

Insights Webinar episode 21

The disparity in access to quality healthcare between rural and urban areas especially in Low and Medium Income Countries (LMIC) is largely due to social determinants of health like economic status, income, education, location amongst other factors. This is basically why underserved communities  consistently struggle to access quality healthcare services largely due to inadequate expertise and lack of quality health equipment and infrastructure.

According to the World Health Organisation, at least 140 countries recognize health as a human right in their constitution. However, the reality on ground is that many nations are not implementing legislations to ensure their populations are entitled to access health services. As of 2021, the World Health Organisation revealed that over 4.5billion people globally were not fully covered by essential health services. This has consistently widened the disparities within and between nations when it comes to access to quality healthcare.

In this vein, the year’s theme of the World Health Day; 'My health, my right’, substantially captures the need to address these challenges in a bid to advance the right of everyone, everywhere to have access to quality health services.  The 21st episode of Insights Webinar  will dissect issues around impediments to promoting Right to quality healthcare. The webinar will also discuss the role of stakeholders in promoting healthcare rights of underserved communities.

INSIGHTS : Investing in Women to Accelerate Digital Progress

INSIGHTS : Investing in Women to Accelerate Digital Progress

According to the United Nations, Progress towards ending poverty needs to be 26 times faster to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. This is not unconnected to the fact that, globally 10.3 percent of women live in extreme poverty and they are poorer than men. One of the major challenges in achieving gender equality by 2030 is lack of sufficient investment in women with a report of over USD 360 billion annual deficit in spending on gender-equality measures .

This may have informed this year’s United Nations theme for International Women’s Day. This is due to the fact that investment in women creates employment, bridges economic gaps and creates a more equal world. In this vein, Strengthening quality education for women and girls and ensuring equal access to leadership training, career development, and funded programmes, particularly in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM), is a key to successful digital transformation.

Thus, addressing institutional barriers, including through removing discriminatory laws, expanding women’s participation in leadership and decision-making and right-sizing investments in gender equality at the national, regional and global levels, are among the concrete actions needed to substantially accelerate progress by 2030. Also, involving different stakeholders, including men and boys, is imperative.
In line with the 2024 UN theme for the International Women’s Day, the 20th episode of the Insights Webinar will focus on the need to invest in digital skills for women  to further accelerate growth and progress in the health sector and across all other facets of endeavours . The webinar series enables insightful conversation with public health professionals to establish eHealth Africa as a thought leader in the Public Health space, create visibility for the organisation, and create new business opportunities for the organisation within the public health space.

INSIGHTS : Integrating Renewable Energy Solutions for Primary Healthcare Facilities

INSIGHTS : Integrating Renewable Energy Solutions for Primary Healthcare Facilities

Beyond the challenges of lack of quality medical equipment and poor staffing, one key issue that has impeded  the optimal performance of Primary Healthcare facilities in Low and Medium Income Countries (LMIC) is poor access to adequate power supply.  According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), close to One Billion globally are served by health-care facilities with unreliable electricity supply or with no electricity access at all.

This worrisome statistics no doubt has a significant impact on public health delivery especially in primary health care facilities and  cottage hospitals in remote areas. Amongst other impacts, poor power access would affect vaccine potency, Blood bank storage,  operation of medical equipment, and adequate lighting for essential procedures. This can hinder efforts to immunise populations, diagnose illnesses, and respond effectively to medical emergencies.

However, the benefits of sustainable renewable energy in healthcare delivery far outweighs its potential risk.  Access to sustainable power supply via Clean energy  creates an enabling environment for inclusive, impactful, and accelerated electrification and a climate-friendly  health sector. Achieving clean energy, especially in the health sector, will go some miles in meeting the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG7); ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all. Beyond this, accessibility to better healthcare service as a result will also help to prevent needless suffering from preventable diseases and premature death by focusing on key targets that boost the health of a country’s overall population. This is also in line with the SDG 3; healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages.

In this vein, the 19th episode of the Insights Webinar will discuss integrating Renewable Energy Solutions for Primary Healthcare Facilities. Insights webinar is a Public Health webinar series hosted by eHealth Africa. The webinar series enables insightful conversation with public health professionals to establish eHealth Africa as a thought leader in the Public Health space, create visibility for the organisation, and create new business opportunities for the organisation within the public health space.

INSIGHTS - Optimising Geographic Information System (GIS) to Improve Healthcare Delivery

In May 2022, the World Health Organisation (WHO) formally launched the Geographic Information System (GIS) Centre for Health in a bid to manage the production and use of geospatial data and tech systems towards strengthening public health interventions. According to the WHO, despite its numerous medical applications and importance in global health, many countries currently lack the benefits of (GIS) to strengthen their health information system.

This may not be unconnected to some technical encumbrances and bottlenecks that may have hindered the optimum utilisation of the systems especially in preparing and responding to health emergencies. The challenges of accessing accurate environmental and demographic amongst other issues around both software and hardware coupled with inadequate technical capacity have become a serious bane to maximum efficacy of GIS in developing countries.

In this vein, there are huge opportunities for developing countries to explore and adopt context-specific systems to improve healthcare delivery. Thus the 14th episode of insights webinar titled; Optimising Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to Improve Healthcare Delivery, will discuss how to surmount challenges to scale GIS in a bid to improve different aspects of healthcare delivery.

The webinar will also amplify interventions by ehealth Africa and other stakeholders in the deployment of geospatial data.

Renewable Energy in Africa: Impact on Public health and Sustainable development

In Nigeria, energy is one of the major challenges affecting the public health sector. Most health facilities run on unreliable power sources and this can interrupt health care delivery, disrupt the cold chain for vaccines, and interrupt life-saving equipment especially when public health is involved. When reliable power is unavailable, all other aspects of health systems strengthening become harder to achieve. Hence, there is a need for partners to collaborate towards improving energy challenges in the health sector.

To address these issues, eHealth Africa will be hosting a thought leadership virtual event themed "Renewable Energy in Africa - Impact on Public health + Sustainable development". During the event, we will engage top-level decision-makers and stakeholders across health and related sectors in Nigeria to discuss energy challenges that affect health facilities and possible solutions. The event will also focus on Renewable energy as a key solution and why health facilities should consider it as a viable alternative with the help of the state government or sponsors.
